Sebaceous Cysts – what they are and how they form

There’s really no such thing as the typical Sebaceous Cyst. They can occur on many different areas of the body – including the neck, back, face or scalp – and vary dramatically in size from less than a centimetre across to larger than a golf ball.

Sebaceous Cysts are caused by the build-up of a perfectly natural substance called sebum – which the body produces as a lubricant. An overabundance of this substance leads to the formation of a Sebaceous Cyst.

Here at our Yorkshire clinic, we use advanced Thermolysis treatments for Sebaceous Cyst removal.

The treatment involves running a Thermolysis current into the affected area using a slender needle. At this point, we find that some liquid frequently drains from the cyst.

After your Sebaceous Cyst Removal

Don’t be surprised if there is some redness around the treated area after the cyst has been removed. This is perfectly normal, and will go down gradually over a couple of days.

It is worth bearing in mind that Sebaceous Cysts, though essentially harmless, do tend to recur. If this happens, you simply need to return to us for a repeat treatment. If more than one is needed, they will normally take place at monthly intervals.
